A mentorship on mural making
Ottawa Valley Creative Arts Open Studio — December 2017 to September 2019
About the project
Ottawa Valley Creative Arts Open Studio (OVCAOS) will be creating a new mural in the Pembroke area during the summer of 2019. Following requests from youth for more art projects and youth programs, OVCAOS plans to create an outdoor mosaic on the side of the Family & Children’s Service of Renfrew County‘s building.
About our mentee: Megan Spencer
We will are mentoring Megan Spencer, OVCAOS’ artist-in-residence, who will be leading this youth project.
Megan is a community arts facilitator and visual artist who has a passion for storytelling through puppetry.
A graduate of Fanshawe College’s Fine Arts program, she is experienced in front-line social service work, which sparked her interest in the expressive arts.
Her art practice is socially engaged. She has created art workshops for youth, as well as for people with Alzheimers and their caregivers in collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Society of Pembroke.
In 2017, Megan was the lead artist in creating a 10 x 20 foot mural at the Salvation Army Youth Centre, which was mounted inside the centre. Some of the young people who participated in that project will be taking part in the Pembroke Youth Mural Project this summer.
What we will do
Through this mentorship, we are taking Megan through the process of creating a large-scale, outdoor mural, which includes the following topics:
- How to work with different populations
- How to create in a public space, for the outdoor elements
- The design and installation process
- Developing community and municipal partners
- Workshop facilitation
- Resources to support her project model
